‘Archaic’ grizzly bear and other trophy hunts must stop

I love how Scott Ellis of the Guide Outfitters Association of B.C. used words like “harvest” in his letter to the editor supporting the grizzly bear hunt. It means kill or — in my view — murder.

Nobody has the right, in my opinion, to kill for sport. Legal or not, it is morally wrong.

If it is self-defence as a last resort, yes. If it is for food for survival, OK. But hunting simply for a trophy or for the adrenalin rush is outrageous.

If a hunter wants an adrenalin rush, go hunt grizzlies with a camera and hope for the best.

This archaic, atrocious so-called sport of trophy hunting must end. I feel sick to my stomach every time I see a beautiful animal wasted by draconian humans.

Glen Loucks, Interlakes

Just ask Cecil the lion

In Scott Ellis’s support for the need to “manage” B.C.’s grizzly bear population of bears in BC, how can he say that “harvesting” two per cent of the herd annually controls the numbers?

He is a guide who makes his living off hunters paying him to find their mount. Of course he is biased.

Harvesting two per cent of anything won’t control a damn thing. What happened to letting mother nature control her own?

It’s sad we can kill legally for a trophy. Just ask Cecil the lion.

It time to try the NDP

This is a close and crucial federal election. The Liberals and Conservatives have been riding the teeter-totter for 150 years and they still have not got it right. Their pricey spin doctors have fooled many of us for too long.

Entitled Tories seem to believe that they are eligible for all Canadian benefits without paying taxes. Privileged Grits are running this election as if Justin Trudeau were running for head boy at a private academy, making outrageous promises and expecting mommy and daddy to pay.

It is time for the NDP’s approach — that we are in this together and must co-operate and collaborate so that the voices and ideas of real people can be heard. The NDP knows it is important for each of us to contribute, to work together, to be in a position to offer support to those who struggle and to know support will be there if we are in need.

Canada is proud of our innovators — let’s work together toward a brilliant future. Choose the NDP this time.

Wendy Eves, Deep Cove

Think before voting Liberal

With only days left before we head to the polls, the Harper haters — the Anyone But the Conservatives crowd — are now backing Justin Trudeau and the Liberals. But the job of prime minister is not a Canadian Idol TV show or a popularity contest. Too many Canadians seem to think this is the case.

I hope, come election day on Monday, emotion does not trump common sense and the realities of today’s world.

Steve Gunson, Abbotsford

Clark should bring in transit sales tax

During the transit plebiscite, I warned that if the 0.5-per-cent sales tax failed, the next proposal would be tolls or road pricing, which is now being discussed.

The sales tax was the best solution because everyone visiting Metro Vancouver would have helped pay for roads and transit.

Another plebiscite will just waste another $10 million. We need Premier Christy Clark to be brave and implement the sales tax.

Dale Laird, Vancouver
